Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, The
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships are federally funded scholastic awards that are designed to encourage studies abroad in non-traditional countries, such as Israel and other areas of the Middle East. While the area remains on the U.S. government’s Travel Warning list, students may reap big scholarship dollars for their risk.

Awards are up to $5,000.
Conditions
Eligibility
1.
The Gilman Scholarship is open to all US citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing.
2.
The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of their study abroad.
3.
The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
4.
The applicant is studying abroad for at least 4 weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 4 weeks.
5.
The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department's current Travel Warning list.
6.
The applicant is studying in the fall, spring, or academic year terms including winter inter-sessions. Summer only programs are not eligible.
7.
The Gilman scholarship aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to:
o
Students with high financial need.
o
Students interested in studying in diverse countries, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia,
o
Students attending community colleges,
o
Students with diverse ethnic backgrounds,
o
Students from diverse range of institutions including two-year, four-year, public, private, minority-serving etc., and
o
Students with disabilities.
Award recipients are selected using the following criteria:
1.
Diversity of Applicant.
2.
Statement of Purpose Essay.
3.
Follow-on Project Proposal Essay.
4.
Academic Progress and Performance.
5.
Fields of Study.
6.
Country of Destination.
7.
U.S. Institution and State Distribution.
8.
Length of Study.
9.
Lack Previous Undergraduate Study Abroad Experience.
